Big Ten Office & Conference Center
In 2016, an existing unirrigated, shaded, sedum extensive green roof tray system existed at the Big Ten Conference’s Office in Rosemont, Illinois. The existing sedum plantings were declining without full sun, so the succulents, plastic trays, and shale-based growth media was replaced with a vegetative roof assembly using Omni Infinity Media and shade-tolerant perennials.
Ferns, Hostas, and Pachysandra have thrived since installation in 2017. Later plantings of Allium, Astilbe, Beardtongue, Coral Bells, Lady’s Mantle, and sedges have added more color and pollinator-friendly flowers to the green roof. Media depth ranges from 3 to 5 inches and certain plant species require the 5-inch depth to survive, but this low-maintenance roof proves that green roofs can be successful in low-light site conditions.
